Hello folks,

Thanks for your replys!

I have ruled out the possibility of overheating - My current CPU core
temperature is now in the region of 34'C - 38'C. Previously it was about
70'C ! I just recently purchase a thermaltake Kandalf super tower case.
A monstrous tower with 5 fans built into the bugger. My muscles are wasted!

Now the funny thing is that my Windows XP installation went further than
before. It used to stop at the text stage of the windows installation -
"windows is now transferring files to the hard drive".

Now the files are now been transferred to the hard drive but it still
continues to stop at the graphical stage of transferring additional
files. I think it could well be an issue with interference / crosstalk
but I tried every possible arrangement for the cables to be neat to my
best of my ability. Is there any tools or apparatus that prevent crosstalk?

My PC specifications are:

Lan Party UT N f4 Ultra D Motherboard.
160 GB SATA HD as SATA 1.
512 DDR 400 Megabyte of RAM on Dimm Slot 2.
EIDE CD - ROM 52x as Primary master.
EIDE ROCIH DVD as Primary slave.
GForce 6800 Ultra on PCI - E.
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 939 socket.
Kandalf Supertower by Thermaltake.

What's the specs on your PSU? Have you run memtest or some other stand
alone software to test the system? Get the HD manufactures diagnostic
software and test the HD for proper operation. With out this info, any
guess would be wild at best.

If it was a PSU issue, surely the PC or the monitor would cut out. The
system just literally just hangs still which I need to restart the PC to
load again. I will try to find the HD manufacturer & memory tester to
see what happens.

Thanks for your replys.

It could easily be the power supply although my first guess would be the
memory. Try going into the BIOS and setting the memory clock down to
266MHz and then try and do your install. If it's a memory timing issue
that will tell you. It could also just be a bad DIMM, try running
Memtest86+ (there are two Memtest86s out there, the + version understands
the Nforce4, the other doesn't). If underclocking the RAM doesn't help and
Memtest86 doesn't find anything I'd try swapping out the power supply for
a bigger one.

I would swap another stick of memory in, this sounds like a memory problem.
Crosstalk would really be a rare occurrence.

512 DDR 400 Megabyte of RAM on Dimm Slot 2.

have you checked with the mainboard manual that it is allowed to install
the memory in dimm2 only?

i suggest you move the memory to dimm 1 and, if it's a single module
into the first slot on the first bank. (mine are green&purple for each bank)

Not so. I had a lock up problem a while back. My PC would freeze when the
CDRW was accessed during gameplay. I had the video card and CDRW drive on
the same power supply line. It's a 300W PS.
I put the video card(FX5900) on it's own supply and it's been fine since.
But I know now that the PS is at it's limit so if I want to add another
drive or upgrade my video card I'll need anew PS too.

I just fixed a computer that locked up at every reboot. Complete
shutdowns worked fine but restarts didn't. It turned out to be the $5
outlet strip that caused it.

Not true. A power supply that can't quite keep up will cause the PC to hang
or reboot. I've seen this plenty of times.
