Hello,

I have tried multiple times installing Windows 2000 on
AMD K6 machine (Soyo Motherboard)512MB of RAM.
Installation goes thru without any problem but Windows
does not boot and it just hangs. I have tried updating
BIOS, and try to boot in safe mode nothing works.
Any help is welcome.
I have tried clean install or upgrade from Win 98 still
the same result.

Thanks
Jesse

Hi,

I've been running it on an AMD XP2100 for years (VIA chipset) without
problems, so it sounds like it may be a specific issue with your
machine? You'll need to be more specific about "does not boot", what
does it say on the screen? Does setup run happily from the CD-ROM? Does
the text mode recovery console run from bootable CD? Have you tried
removing all the non-essential PCI cards prior to running setup?

Sounds to me like you have an issue with your system not selecting the
correct disk to boot off of. Try doing the following:

1. Find another machine running Windows 2000
2. Format a floppy disk (quick format is fine - we need to format to get a
valid bootsector on the floppy)
3. Go to the root of the C:\ drive and copy over the following files:

1. Boot.ini
2. NTLDR
3. NTDETECT.COM

Try booting off of this floppy.

The system does start up but it just hangs when trying to
load windows while displaying the Windows 2000 logo.
I have tried loading Windows 2000 on a drive that boots
up fine in another machine, but when I try using this
machine the windows just hangs when displaying Windows
2000 logo.
Thanks
Jesse

I think there is no problem with XP2100 machines. But
this one is a bit older AMD K6 processor.

Thanks

OK, did you remove all the PCI cards (except video) and try again? Did
you run the recovery console from bootable CD, and were you able to log
in? If you've got an older chipset, it may be that you need to install
some 3rd party drivers (VIA or whatever) at setup time, but I've never
come across this. You may be better off on a forum that covers AMD K6 so
you can compare notes with others, I don't think you'll find many people
on here running K6.

I have installed Windows 2000 Pro on a K6-2 450MHZ machine and had no problems. HOWEVER
I did run into the same problems Mr. J Mann had on an older K6-200MHZ machine.... Loading 200
was no problem until you rebooted - then you would get a "fatal" "BLUE SCREEN" error and could go
no further - I can not remember the error however (as I have reloaded Windows98)
