AMD Cool and Quiet

Well, CnQ works but since installing it, my system crashed 3 times over 3
days. No other changes to it other than CnQ.

I enabled ACPI 2.0 in the bios, etc., followed the directions but it made my
system unstable.

The version of CnQ I used was from the ASUS website for the A8V.

OS is XP professional.

I searched google but did not find an answer, however, if one is going to
use ACPI 2.0, does that need to be enabled before installing the OS?

I think that caused a problem here too. But the (ASUS?) Q-fan CPU
fan speed controller is cool IMO. It's cool and quiet here.

In my experience, if (a prior version of) Windows was installed with
ACPI enabled, then ACPI would be difficult/impossible to remove. You
probably cannot just enable it afterwards.

C&C works on my A8V deluxe, however I don't have ACPI2 enabled. The only
problem I get is with some games, which don't seem to like C&C very much, so
I turn it off when gaming.
The only thing I have trouble with is the AMD dual core optimiser. When I
have that installed, not much works properly.

Could someone please explain what ACPI is, why I would or would not want to
enable it, and whether I understand correctly that if enabled, it should be
done prior to the OS install?

I seem to remember getting some message about ACPI after an OS system crash
(vista RC1), but I can't find any info about this on google.

APM is advanced power management and is BIOS based. It provides for CPU and
device power management. The OS has no knowledge of APM and APM uses device
activity timeouts to determine when to switch devices into a low-power
state.

ACPI is also APM but it provides an interface to the OS, so, now the OS
(like XP) controls the power management.

ACPI has replaced APM.

I do not know the exact differences between ACPI 1.x and ACPI 2.0 but my
question is the same as yours, if XP was installed without 2.0 enabled (it
is usually disabled by default in the bios), were all the proper components
installed for 2.0?

Basically it took over/added to P&P and Advanced Power Management and
added virtual IRQs when APIC was also added.

C&C wouldn't install on my Nvidia based chip set(Or at least the
version I found) and also I had problems when some program I installed
enabled DEP.I think it was an anti-virus I tried out.Anyway disabled
that option and stopped my gaming problems.

Ok, figured it out.

I installed XP with ACPI 2.0 disabled. I also installed the latest
processor driver for my AMD X2 4400 from the AMD website.

What I found is the processor driver includes CnQ functionality. To enable
it, turn on ACPI 2.0 in the bios and in XP, set power management to minimal.

What confused me is the ASUS PC Probe showed the current speed of the
processor at 2200. I also installed 'power setup' from the AMD website and
it also showed 2200 for the cpu frequency.

After doing the above (enable ACPI 2.0, power management minimal), 'Power
Setup' shows the CPU frequency and voltage going up and down. I verified it
with CPU-Z, the core speed runs at 1000 or so when the PC is not doing
anything.

Also, the temp is down to a 5 degree spread (celsius) between the MB and the
CPU.

As I said, when I explained how to do this, you don't actually need ACPI 2.0
enabled. I don't on my PC and C&Q runs fine. As I said, all you needed to do
was install the C&Q driver and enable minimal power management.

That is what I mean, CnQ is not required. If you installed the processor
driver from AMD, it includes CPU throttling.

If I installed CnQ then it would be like having two CnQ's running at the
same time.

....just checked in my bios. I have only two options:
1) Power on Suspend under ACPI OS
2) Suspend to Ram under ACPI OS

....not really sure what the difference is? I'm currently set to #1.

Most modern PC mother boards have ACPI automatically enabled and no
option to disable it therefore it doesn't appear in the BIOS as in
effect it's hidden.The O/S picks it up and installs the correct
drivers when the O/S is installed.
Older boards had the option in the BIOS when it was implemented so
users could disable it if they had problems but as hardware maker's
took on board<sic> the new protocol the need to disable it became
redundant.
The entries you see are just suspend modes.

When I installed it, I got crashes in Battlefield 2. Uninstalled and
all was fine.

Yup..about the same as I get.
The only thing I have trouble with is the AMD dual core optimiser. When I

Works fine for me although I'm not sure there's actually any gain.
