got a delema, im so torn, I want to upgrade my office!
I would like anyones advice! I try to keep my computers for 3 years.

I plan to work with all sorts of macromedia mx, photoshop, bryce, other
graphics more than video productions..Data retretrival, some music.

and I am starting to be a gamer on pc mroe than my xbox. is that weird?

by the way my athlon 1500, 1 gig of ddr does everyting good enough.
Harddrive is a little slow on this system!

I like the apple flat screens and the NEC flat screens if i go with PC.

Much Love, and appreciation all,

mark and Mindy

think I might wait for the apple g5, amd 64 will only be as good as the
software for a 64 bit system.
The P4 extreme is as fast as the amd 64 for 32 bit software. The Apple is
the best for graphics, now gaming is a different story. For gaming the P4 or
the AMD 64 would be better I think.

Thanks for you insight BigJim,

yeah, I get bored quickly with games though, I wish apple would go to a 2
button mouse is all. I am leaning towards the Apple due to I like the feel
of the OS X, along with the quality of Ichat / Isight for buisness
conferncing. Not as much software so I might keep my old pc on the side!

Thoughts!

Hi mark.
I would go for an Athlon 64, the G5s are good but from what I have seen only
really beat the AMD 64s and P4 EE on certain tasks. And if your a gamer then
go with either an Athlon 64FX or P4 EE, I think the AMD 64s would have more
of a longer life than the P4 EE as the P4 was rushed out in response to the
AMD processors. Also when Windows 64 comes out next year there should be
bit more of a speed increase. Also remember that the 64 FX processor has 940
pins and the next ones out will only have 939 pins so you will probably need
to upgrade the motherboard in the future should you upgrade the processor.
Have you considered a dual Opterron system, although I am not sure what
games performance would be like.
Hope this helps.

Get the Apple for intense graphics works. Get the P4 3.2 if you want to
play games mostly. The AMD 64 is a bit of a waste of money at the moment
because it doesn't offer HyperThreading and Windows XP 64 bit isn't due out
for a while yet.
No one computer does everything best.

Check out the current issue of "Maximum PC". They compare the AMD 64,
P4EE, and G5. They got some interesting and even surprising (to them)
results. Each of them have their strengths and weaknesses. i.e. The G5
didn't do too well on some things you would think and the other way too.
One area it was good in was the dual processor. They kind of concluded
that the AMD 64 and G5 really needed optimize OS and apps to match their
true power.

However, their pick for the best all around was the P4EE. It was a very
interesting article.

Thanks, BigJim, DaveW, Clyde, and others...

Holly cow the water sure is muddy! especial since I am dragging my feet.

I did read the Maxium PC article. I thiink I am going to have to go with
pricing, not preference! What do you think is the best buy! I can get a g5
dual 2.0 for 2699, I an get a fully loaded p4ee for $3000 via alienware, and
great amd64 for $2200 via *compusa*

I wonder if apple has an edge with 64bit software, I would think so! Also
with Apple you dont have as many pop ups and active x taking over your
browser, I had a cookie set my browser to a couple of xxx sites that I could
not get off till i reformated! Also less spyware!

Would love to hear your all thoughts?

The signs in the sky says it's a good time to drag your feet... ;)
My own plan is to wait for 'nForce3 250' and 'SIS 755' mobos for AMD64
to be out and reviewed. By that time, maybe the Athlon64 and AthlonFX
families have been extended as well. Or maybe the ram situation for
dual Opterons has improved (Opteron240 is $200 each).
I will then simply decide on what kind of AMD64 system I'll get. As
long as 64-bit performance isn't too compromised, I'll probably be
aiming at a cheap system (754-pin). It _WILL_ be an AMD64. 64-bit
mainstream PCs, will probably be x86-64. That's my take.

If anything is "waste of money today" it's a highend Intel 32-bit
system. Even today, with 32-bit OS and 32-bit apps, you get the same
or better performance with AMD64, for the same or less money, than
Intels highend 32-bit.

AMD 2500-2800 and Intel P4C&800 2.4-2.6 comes close for reasonable
money, and is in my eyes the (best buy) way to go for a 32-bit system
today.

What does anyone want a P4EE for? It's marketed at 'gamers', but will
be utterly irrelevant for future highend gaming (which will be all
64-bit). There is a word for people that blows their money on P4EE.
Starts with an " i "...
($3000 for a system that can't do anything a 2.6@800 P4C-ATI9800 can't
do, more than very marginally better!?! - Jeez... )

Apples G5 is a very nice machine for a server or a specialist lowcost
workstation. Imaging, video, publishing... I like Apple, but for a
personal utility PC, my feel is that software flexibility/buck isn't
there the way I need it.
