Hello.

1st time poster. I have a quick question for the experienced. Are there
any concerns with the 'standard' (ie Amd retail version) of the heatsink/fan
that comes standard with this chip? I just purchased one from Newegg (along
with a DFI Lan nf3, OCZ 2x512 Pc3200), and I want to know if I can get by
with the regular heatsink. I looked at some different options, but decided
to just wait on the additional cost involved.

I already have a 3000+ (s754, 2ghz, 512 cache), with a Asus K8vse ... and it
runs fine with the standard Amd heatsink/fan.

Thanks.

The only problem I see with the AMD retail cooler is that it has only a
one tab clip on each end. I had one break the retainer and fall off. I
replaced it with a cheap TR2-M6 which uses 3 tba clips (now 2 on one end
of the broken retainer). The TR2-M6 gives about the same performance as
the retail cooler but is quieter due to the larger fan.

I had that happen on a T-bird once - it really stinks. I prefer the
coolers that use the 3 tabs as well.

I was referring though, to the cooling aspect. The 64's seem to run a lot
cooler than the older chips (I've owned quite a few). I don't know if I
intend to OC it, but ... if the stock cooler will keep it cool at stock
speeds. I'll find out about Thursday/Friday. I considered purchasing a X2
4200, but the deal that I got with Newegg saved me about $40 on the memory.
Plus, I'd probably be wanting a pci express vid. card ... (once you start
down the dark side, forever it dominates your destiny ... lol). Upgrade for
my computer, with my son getting my older 3000.

Thanks for the info.

I've got a s754 A64 2800+ running at 2.2ghz(1.6v) using the retail
heatsink/fan.runs in the low 50's under load.
