With all the recent posts about failed fans, I never cease to be
amazed that manufacturers put those cheapo sleeve bearing fans on such
expensive cards....after all, if you are willing to spend that much on
a card, I am sure the same buyer would fork over an extra few $$ for a
good bearing fan!
I have had an ATI 9700 Pro since they first came out. When my fan
failed I put the huge VGA silencer on it...(think it was about $15
RETAIL) Works great and is quiet. There are also other after market
solutions
While I was at it, I did the not recommended procedure for removing
the shim. I used a hair dryer on it to loosen the glue first and it
was relatively easy to get rid of....IF YOU ARE CAREFUL!
