Building a new PC and i was wondeing if AM2 would be a better idea then 939.
Yes, it's newer, more forward support for faster CPUs and
other one-generation-newer feature sets.
Have read something about memory problems on AM2 though. Price is about the
same.
Yes, if price is most important, buy a 939 as the
performance is quite similar (enough to not matter in the
long run). However, if you're buying memory too, buying the
DDR(1) means you certainly only get one system's use out of
it, while moderately good DDR2 you might be able to reuse.
I can't know if this matters to you but I like to buy parts
that are as versatile/reusable as possible.
Something to keep in mind is that AMD's next gen CPUs for
socket AM3, are supposed to work in socket AM2, too, so you
might get a significant upgrade in the future if only your
system supports those CPUs when the time comes. Of course I
can't guarantee this kind of upgrade path *today*, when the
time comes you may need a motherboard bios update for
example so in general it's yet another reason to buy from
companies that have good product support like Asus, Abit,
sometimes MSI or Gigabit. Then again if you only want
cheapest build, some of the 2nd tier brands can be a good
value.
