Am I supposed to see more ram with a readboost drive inserted?

My 4gig flash drive plugged and played and readyboost is running correctly I
believe. However on the performance meter it still says I have 1 gig of Ram.
Am I supposed to see this additional ram here or not?

Think of ReadyBoost as swap file on steroids.

So which would be better another ram chip or a flash drive? My memory meter
is always pegged to the red, the system runs pretty good, but should I put
more memory in? Would it run better?

It it hard to determine if ReadyBoost is actually running. Vista reports the
service "Started" even when it is not performing its function.

ReadyBoost simply acts as a 'faster' swap file, you certainly won't see any
increase in RAM. Performance increases, and these will only be slight,
appear overtime not immediately. Personally if you have 1GB of RAM i would
consider adding extra RAM rather than using readyboost. Readyboost is more
suitable for those who have only 512MB RAM.

No, using Windows ReadyBoost is not the same thing as adding more system memory.
Windows ReadyBoost can improve system performance because it can retrieve data kept
on the flash memory more quickly than it can retrieve data kept on the hard disk, decreasing
the time you need to wait for your PC to respond.

When using a 4 Gig Flash Media for ReadyBoost to the increase memory cache
(casually referred to as RAM) when manually configured for using the maximum
media storage, the 4 Gig Flash Media provides an increase of 1.5 Gig memory
cache (casually referred to as RAM).

As previously shared within other Post in this Thread, machines that use 512
(stick) RAM realize the greatest performance enhancements; machines using 2.0
Gig (stick) RAM realize less performance enhancements, reference below
paragraph.
