I bought it from Best Buy when XP came out so its been a while. I did
actually do a phone activation once. (Lotsa hardware changes I guess)
I didn't think of keeping the receipt, certainly not for years. Have the
retail version, not the blue book/pamplet that came with it. Amazing what
you can lose when you move your "Puter room" one door down. (It is a pro
verion $199 retail upgrade at Best Buy, no I haven't forgot what it cost)
Old machine died, I built a new one, and want to kill off 98. Maybe
something like a damaged disk return is an option??? Or am I hung out to
dry??? I do good keeping car titles and the like, just never thought of
saving that receipt for all this time...Thanx...

I don't understand your question at all. You say you have a retail copy of
XP Pro. There is no problem using it on another computer as long as you
have your Win98 cd as qualifying media. So what is the problem and why do
you need proof of purchase? Are you saying you lost the XP Pro cd?

What is your actual problem? All I can see is you have no proof of purchase
for XP. Even re-reading I am not sure of your problem. Are you trying to
upgrade a 98 computer to XP?

You might be hung out to dry. You might get a friend to inform you of a
key - not that I'm recommending you use it. After six months Windows Product
Activation resets so a key can be used again .. hint hint .. don't do
anything morally wrong though, just go as far as you are legitmately are
entitled to. A key must match - Pro to Pro, OEM to OEM - Retail to Retail
etc. etc. else the install routine balks.

BTW be sure to install SP2 BEFORE connecting to the Internet. Pre-SP2
installations of Windows XP are vulnerable upon connection to the Internet
and can be compromised within minutes - before you have time to download and
install the updates. You can order SP2 on CD from Microsoft or download the
full network version and burn to CD-R.

If you bite the bullet and get a copy of Home or Pro retail upgrade from the
local box store, it should already come with SP2.

Newegg.com sell copies of Windows XP at reasonable prices:

P.S. If you buy a copy of Professional make sure you get the one you want
i.e. i386 [32-bit] or x64. I think I provided a link to Pro x64.

Sorry, but I don't understand what the problem is. You don't need the
receipt. Why do you think you do? What are you trying to do? What happens
when you try?

going to the effort to make the post easily understandable.

Sorry all, I just got "It" built and realized I have my original XP Disk
but the Cover/pamplet/serial # are long gone when I moved computer rooms.
Heck I could even mail the disk somewhere for verification and a number if
it would help. Sorry for the "state of panic" Nothing like finding this out
at the last moment. My apologies to the group, thanx again for your time.

Funny, I haven't eaten real jelly beans in years, but here I sit eating
yellow ones when I read this. Funny coincidence or perhaps unconscience.
