Am I doing something wrong?

William B. Lurie

At an MVP's suggestion, I joined the group
microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware and posted
a message, with bcc to myself. Going to that
new group to read "All", I see no messages,
12 hours after posting it. Not even my own
posted message. Of course, I did receive my
own bcc'd message.

Can some MVP please check that that group is alive
and functional, and let me know? If I'm doing
something wrong, what? Thanks.

David, I don't understand what your message infers, other than
that my message was indeed properly posted to the hardware
newsgroup. What do I have to do, in order to see the messages
which have been posted to that newsgroup......including the
message which I posted?

Bill,

Looking at the Microsoft news server, msnews.microsoft.com, I see your
test message Message ID: <[email protected]> and you
Message-ID: <[email protected]> of 11:35 today, "Drive Copy
Won't boot" of 03:40 today.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Thanks, Rob. So my messages get posted there, and I have
to determine why Mozilla on my machine treats this
newsgroup different from all other newsgroups. I'll ask there....

I'm using Mozilla. My hunch is that Mozilla is doing nothing different.
You have probably set something up differently under the View Menu
since this was a new "subscription". Just compare settings between this
group and others.

Are you using a news reader (Outlook Express) or the web
interface?

With a news reader you can set the view to show your posts,
highlight messages, etc.

Hi, Bill.

Are you posting directly to the Microsoft public news server (which is free
and does not require you to log in)? Or are you using your ISP's news
server? Many news servers simply "slurp" posts from the MS public server
and relay posts and responses to and from their subscribers. This relay can
cause delays, out-of-sequence responses, and even lost messages.

I'm not sure how Mozilla affects this, but for most users, this link works:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware

Clicking that link should start Outlook Express 6, create a News Account for
that server, subscribe you to the hardware newsgroup, and download the 300
latest messages. These will be coming directly from the MS server, not
through some other server. When you post a message this way, it should be
available for downloading within minutes.

There are over 2,000 public newsgroups on the MS public server, including
several dozen (in English and other languages) for Windows XP.

I am using Mozilla, a Netscape derivative.
The group is under msnews.microsoft.......

Thank you, R.C. .....I am already using that link,
but not Outlook Express. What bugs me is that it
acts differently from other newsgroups. I'll
'speriment some more.

I saw that in a later post of yours. I have noticed that
the time involved between news and email servers varies, at
any point in time, the email may be faster or slower than
the newsgroups.
I am using OE for both email and news and have not used
Mozilla enough to give any particular advice. Are you
running version 1.6? Have you checked Mozilla.org for FAQs?

It's there, Bill as follows:

The m.p.w.basics MVPs suggested I post this here.
I made a drive image of my Master drive XP......
and recreated it on another hard drive, to use as
a backup for when the Master dies, as has been
known to happen. It's a nice copy, clean, the
right size and all that. The question is, how do
I make it bootable? I mean, I want to be able to
substitute that hard drive bodily for the Master,
and have it boot just like the Master. Let me add
that in addition to the 5 GB XP in that partition,
there is something on that drive (according to
Partition Magic) labeled 'unallocated 7.8 MB,
primary' and not active. Thank you.

Read the manual :-)

Raw message view and one can see:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.6)[...]
I am using Mozilla, a Netscape derivative.

Mozilla news client has filters witch can give you possibility of
watching your posts. Choose a group and then press Tools -> Message
filters -> New -> and there create a new filter with action "watch
thread" when sender is "your name" - it's really easy. ;-)
