I have a home network of three computers two Windows XP home edition
machines (Dell and Compaq) and one Windows 98se machine(Gateway). Yes those
are the manufacturers as well as their names on the my network. Dell is the
base machine which connects my network to a dialup internet connection. My
problem is when I open "My Network Places" on Dell, it takes forever to
display the connected computers. Then when it does it displays no where near
the shared files and folders on the other two computers that it's suppose
to. Dell has been updated to include all the latest updates from Microsoft.
I've even taken the extraordinary step of disabling the built in NIC and
replacing it with a Linksys LNE100TX. It still does the same thing. The
Gateway and Compaq aren't like that they open almost instantly. What could
the problem be?

Thanks
Rodger

You know what it doesn't have the same problem. Although it does shows
compaq as being on the LAN when it's shutdown. So how do I solve the being
slow problem?

Sorry if this gets posted twice the first one was returned undeliverable.

thanks
Rodger

Try this. Go to the dialup connection's properties, Networking tab. Make
sure "Client For Microsoft Networks" and "File and Print Sharing for
Microsoft Networks" are not checked. Then select Internet Protocol (which
should be checked) and select properties. Select the advanced button. On
the WINS tabs, make sure "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" is selected.

If that doesn't help, post back and there's more we can try.

Wow that works great. Just one more thing how do I get all the files and
folders to show up in the initial list of the computers. What I mean is,
that on Compaq I show one folder but when I go to "view workgroup computers"
I can see six folders available on Compaq. How do I get those six files and
folders to show up in the first list.

Thanks allot

The initial view of My Network Places is sort of a history of folders you
have viewed. I'm not quite sure of the rules, but additional folders should
appear there as you use them. You can always add anything you want as well.
