I don'a allow real player on my windows 2000 system. So far I've
found that the alternatives to real player that can play .RM and
..RAM files either make changes *to* windows media player, or
they require the realplayer "engine" (which I assume is from
installing real player anyway?).

Are there any that are standalone, in that they'll run without
windows media player?

I use * Real Alternative *
Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having
to install RealPlayer/RealOne Player. < w/ WMP >

I tried installing Realalternative in Win98 and got some
gobbledygook about "Media Player 'Classic'"", whatever that is. I don't
know what that was about but don't have Realalternative installed. Later
"discovered" that it does not adequately play the realaudio format used
by the WWW site of interest and so I am as well off, I guess. YMMV
