ATI apps are leaking memory in my PC. I have done considerable
troubleshooting and testing, I installed new drivers for the AIW 9600 Pro,
the Audigy sound card, the VIA AGP driver. I flashed the BIOS, I removed
unnecessary hardware and/or disabled drivers, etc. But I still have the
memory leak (which is eventually fatal). It has been suggested that I use
other software apps besides ATI. Well, I don't know much about how that
would work or where to get something that would work. I don't know much
about multimedia. Because all my time so far has been spent tinkering
endlessly trying to get my ATI stuff working. I have spent hundreds of
hours in the last year trying to get this stuff to work right. I could try
my hardware and software on a different PC, or I could try some different
apps on this PC.

If there is alternative software apps, I am very willing to try them out. I
would appreciate your suggestions.

The memory leak is not a known issue with ATI software, which could mean
that whatever you switch to you are going to have a problem. I am not
being unkind, just suggesting that the problem facing you might be
related uniquely to your system. Have you run your machine for a test
in a standard VGA driver with no ATI stuff running at all, just for long
enough to monitor memory? I must admit, when you say "apps", I am
unclear if you mean alternatives to Catalyst device drivers or some
multi-media programs. You could look out some Omega drivers and there
are numerous programs to provide multi-media or capture services with
either ATI or alternate drivers, depending on what you want to do. Let
us know?

This is with AIW video recording, right?

Does the memory drain happen at the same rate as the video file size
increase on your hard drive?

Do you have a constant swapfile size?

Tried older/newer versions of the ATi multimedia software?

OK. I did some work. I may have had multiple problems. I got newer ATI
drivers and other ATI files. Also there is an issue with the older Sound
Blaster Audigy driver I had, so I got a newer one of those too. I Flashed
my BIOS to a newer version. I got a newer version of the VIA AGP driver for
my MOBO (ASUS A7v266). I did other stuff too. Things are working much
better, however there are still some puzzling things. Now that the glitches
are fixed I realize what I thought was a memory leak isn't causing the
problems. Here are the mysterious things:

1) When I record (cable TV, VCR, etc.), Windows System Monitor shows the
unused physical memory (initially over 300 MB) constantly decreasing right
down to nothing - none left at all - but now I see that isn't hurting
anything. In fact I can start and run other programs at that point, though
SysMon says there is no memory left. I never did monitor virtual memory at
the same time. I don't know why it would be using virtual memory. Also,my
virtual memory isn't fixed size. I don't understand why SysMon would show
my unused physical memory dwindling away. I can see how the recording
process might use some, but not a continually increasing amount.

2) The Launch Pad program appears not to work very good. I realize I don't
need really need it, but it's goofy operation was adding to my belief that I
had some fundamental system problem. The DVD app and the FilePlayer app
often hang during start up when I start them with LP. After I kill the
aborted program via Ctrl+Alt+Del Launch Pad won't launch any video program
again though LP itself doesn't appear to be hung. I was so focused on LP I
didn't realize I could start the apps simply by clicking the files (of
course). I discovered I can also start the apps by clicking their .RSC
files - though I have no idea what those files are for.

Anyhow, thanks for your response to my post. Any additional comments will
be appreciated.
