Look for an alternative to read and post news messages.

Also need to be able to view binaries.

Any thoughts please?

Many thanks,

NP.

Geesh, that's a tough one. All the better e-mail programs have no news
reader, and the better news readers have no e-mail.

I would have to say 40tude Dialog is arguably the best.

Another promising program to audition is XanaNews. It's an up and coming
program that's small, compact, and has good features.

I would have to disagree with your assertion that the better e-mail
programs have no newsreader! The Mozilla Suite's Mail and Newsgroups
component and Mozilla Thunderbird are both excellent email programs and
they both have superior newsreaders.

But no multipart binary handling.

Eh? I had no idea that T-Bird was noted as a superior news reader.

40Tude Dialog (also handles yEnc & multi-part articles).

....and a big thank you to whomever turned me on to 40tude! I was using
Microplanet Gravity to this point and putting up with "you have to
download it to see it." 40tude doesn't do that, AND downloads batch
jobs, AND handles multipart and Y'enc seemlessley, AND lets you preview,
AND, AND, AND....

Totally cool program you HAVE to try it out.

Normally not so efflusive, but gawd, if all freeware was this good,
Microsoft would be out of business in a year!

don't use 40tude for binaries. it's a mess... 40tude stores all stuff,
emails, posts, binaries in a single file...
File corruption risk, slow performance is what you get with large number of
posts/binaries

Yes although 40tude default is one folder, you can specify a different
folder for each newsgroups attachments to be stored in as well as seperate
one for e-mail.

I have fallen in love with XNews. Good tool that can be run from a
flash drive (great for work!)

I found 40tude to be too complicated to use (especially for multiple servers -
I have 5 or so, and for offline reading). :/

The way it handles multiple servers is why I like it - it's not ideal in
other respects imo, but I use the Categories feature extensively. Having
the ability to have several ngs, coming from different servers, showing up
in one place, is what keeps me with 40tude rather than any of the other
newsreaders.

I have currently 10 servers. What is too complicated?
ISTM that also the offline reading is very friendly.

Works fine here too. For both multi servers and offline reading. Way
better "out of the box" than programs like XNews etc. It also does
email, spell checking, inline image display etc. etc. 40tude is just
an amazing program.

Regards, John.

Strange. I find 40tude to have too much features for me, while I just need a
very simple newsreader. [1]. But since I use Gravity since version 2.50...

[1] This remembers me of the EMACS editor from Linux.
