Hello All.

I have just downloaded and installed Open Office v1.1 and although it is
undoubtedly feature rich, it takes a long time to load on my computer.

Does anyone know of other freeware word suites that I could try?

TIA.

None with nearly the features of OO. You can try to cut down on
loading time by unchecking the "Activate Help Agent" under
"Options/General."

OpenOffice is the only one of several apps I tried that properly
displayed an assortment of large and complex MS Word documents I threw
at it, without hanging or crashing. Abiword and Atlantis Nova (both
listed at www.pricelessware.org) are capable low-end alternatives, and
either can be supplemented with the MS Word Viewer if you need to open
lots of fancy Word documents from others.

Another option: start one of the OpenOffice applications, for
example, Writer then use the menu "Tools" => "Options" and in the
dialog "OpenOffice.org" => "Memory" tick "Load OpenOffice.org during
system startup". I don't like to do this, but you might.

If you use office everyday, and I don't, it's a reasonable option and
speeds up the load time considerably.

I deactivated the Help Agent in Star Office 7, about the same as Open Office
and it helped speed-up loading a lot. Try it.

If you need a good word processor, try Atlantis Ocean Mind (payware) or
Atlantis Nova (freeware).

Loads fast, even on low-end systems. Very userfriendly, it's in a class of
its own.

I like it so much that I registered the pay version.
