After trying out Music Match which (after unintalling) left 143 entries
behind in the registry and MediaMaonkey which wasn't much cleaner (103), I
am looking for a freeware Jukebox-type app that doesn't embed itself so
messily into my system.

Nothing too fancy is necessary, just a simple way of organizing mp3's and
acccessing them without having to browse thru folder after folder.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I used MMJB for some time before getting sick of the ever increasing bloat,
and went unhappily to Winamp.

I never liked Winamp for several reasons, but have grown accustomed to it.

I always used .m3u playlists even with MMJB, so I can still use the same
ones with Winamp.

Songs-DB is very nice--integrates with Winamp. Not pretty, but fast and
flexible.

Their arrogant attitude towards the customer really pisses me off and I
would LOVE to find an alternative! In my opinion, they are a mini Microsoft
in their approach to the people the serve.

But their product has that "one stop shopping" design makes it impossible to
find a direct one for one replacement. Plus, aside from being a resource
hog, it pretty much does what it claims to do. (and does it well)

All the alternatives mentioned so far do SOME of what MMJB does, but none of
them do it all.

Developers of music software, MMJB has a market pretty much to itself (lets
call it the "Music Suite"). That market is aimed squarely at people like
me, casual consumers of music who want results without having to do a bunch
of system tweaking and adjustments and without having to learn 5 different
programs and then teaching them how to interact with each other. Maybe 3 to
5 different standalone modules could be created with the same look and feel
and that could work seamlessly together once loaded on the same machine.
Maybe it could be called the "OpenMusic Suite".

Maybe there is room for only one product of its kind, but maybe this is an
area that should be explored. I'm a lousy programmer (hey! I'm old and not
current! I remember not only when there were 1's and 0's, I remember what an
improvement the addition of the concept of 1 was!) but I'm a pretty decent
project manager and database designer, I'd lend my skills to such a project
if needed.

Hey, I was a devoted MMJB user until version 7. I found the program
intuitive, easy to use, and liked the interface.

What I don't like since version 7 came out is the ever growing bloat. It
also now seems to be programmed to crash if I don't allow it to access the
Internet at start. I don't care why it wants to access the Internet: that's
simply behavior that I don't allow.

I could still use version 6, but now it's impossible to install DFX with 6,
since it had to be installed online, and MMJB has disabled DFX
installation to version 6. Another bit of "protectionism" and forcing one
to move to the later version.

Songs DB seems to have morphed into MediaMonkey, I wonder if the "old"
version is less intrusive than the shiny "new" one?

I have been using WA 5 beta for a few days and it is almost enough for what
I want.

The new skins make the player usable on 1280 and up resolutions, which was
becoming an issue for ME with 2.x and the new look Media Library is almost
efficient enough for my purposes.

What I'd still like to find is a clean and small db program that would
allow me to esily manipulate (change tags, organize, etc) mp3's outside of
the WA environment.
