Hi Guys,

I am looking for a free (obviously) alternative notepad from the bog
standard one that comes with windows. If there are a few could you also
please advise me which is the best to use.

The reason I require it for is, that I am learning how to build a website
using hand coding. I realize that there are programs out there to do it for
me, but I want to start at the bottom so to speak and learn the hand code
first.

Many thanks.

Keep up the good work guys!

There are lots, but I swear by Notetab Lite from www.notetab.com

I think you'll find this will do virtually anything you want.

Crimson editor is very good for html coding, it colour codes tags,
attributes, etc, and I for one don't think that's cheating! I could never
find my way through a decent size table without it.

It can also call a browser to facilitate checking

Crimson editor also is just a good notepad replacement. It has print
preview, spell check, can switch fonts easily, tabbed interface to have
several files open. It is my standard simple text editor / notepad
replacement.

Notetab is not bad but it does NOT include a spell checker. Like many of
the Notepad replacements out there, you must pay for that feature.

Besides Crimson editor is there a FREE notepad replacement out there with a
Spell Checker.

Chack out stratus pad here:
http://www.ealoha.com/winfree.htm
Once extracted you can just run the stratus.exe without running
the setup.exe

There are two listed here, along with some other details that might be
of interest, like syntax highlighting:

Check out the NotePad tab, most of the others are still in progress.
You might be interested in the WordPad tab also.

1st Page 2000, AceHTML 4 Pro, AceHTML 5 Freeware, and Selida are great HTML
editors (and they are true freeware). I think they all have tabbed
interfaces. All can preview the web page (usually you just switch between
HTML editing view and Web preview view using a nice tab).

IMHO, 1stPage2000 (www.evrsoft.com) has the nicest interface, but it's HTML
preview function doesn't work quite right (except on the first web page
previewed). It comes with tons of free Jscripts, but one is suspicious.

So, Selida and AceHTML 5 Freeware are my picks. Selida uses a split-screen
method to preview the Web page AND show the HTML source for editing
SIMULTANEOUSLY. Selida is Pricelessware; I don't remember it's web page, so
you could look it up there; [ AceHTML is at www.visicommedia.com ].

(Actually, I use a copy of HTMLPad 2000, but it's only free with some
magazines.)

Where does one find Crimson editor? (If I find it before anybody replies,
I'll post the link. And the race is on!)
