regclean.exe is no longer being offered for downloading
because of problems that people encounter due to it. is
there and alternative to regclean.exe? any suggestions or
similar applications?

In W2K, depending on the situation you can use repair installation,
last known good configuration, restoring the System State [if you have it
backed up], use Recovery Console to restore saved copy of the registry, use
regedt32 to save/restore registry, or possible resetting local security
policy back to default which will reset a lot of registry settings. ---

IMHO regclean never was a registry fix. I've never had it fix a problem.
It removes registry entries without replacing them. And AFAIK it only
scanned certain portions of the registry, such as the portion involving OLE.
I might recommend uninstall and reinstall, or perhaps a solution that backs
up your system state such as NTBACKUP with Windows 2000 and XP.
