I am looking for a product to replace ntbackup for my local pc/laptop
backup regime.

ntbackup is ok but there are a few issues that I want to address.

What I need from a product is:

a) ability to manualy select directories to backup
b) backup of files into a single encrypted archive file (don't want
anyone else to browse or view files or contents without password)
c) need to be able to control it from command line (i.e. I want to
script it to backup on system login - currently achieving this through
a batch file)
d) need to be able to access the archive file and read the contents
(with a password) simply and easily - ntbackup is a nightmare to try
and restore from...

any advice?

I would guess that every backup program except ntbackup can do this.
I use ATI. It contains its own scheduler which accomplishes item c) for
example.

I understand your concerns, but suggest that you may want to do a little
more research because you misunderstant a couple things:
What I need from a product is:

a) ability to manualy select directories to backup NT BACKUP CAN DO THAT
b) backup of files into a single encrypted archive file (don't want
anyone else to browse or view files or contents without password)
NT BACKUP CREATES ONE SINGLE FILE, A *.BKF. But, you CAN peruse it if
one wishes to. It can also be password protected.
c) need to be able to control it from command line (i.e. I want to
script it to backup on system login - currently achieving this through
a batch file) HOW ELSE WOULD YOU DO THAT?
d) need to be able to access the archive file and read the contents
(with a password) simply and easily - ntbackup is a nightmare to try
and restore from...
NTBACKUP IS AS EASY AS ANY OF THE OTHERS TO RESTORE FROM. Locate your
file in an explorer like window, select it, click Restore and choose
whether to put in in its original location or to a new location.

You might want to take a look at the current version of WinZip. It lets
you create and schedule jobs, with schedules, compressed, and password
protected if so desired, and is pretty straight forward to use for
recovering one or more files/folders from. As long as you aren't
backing up hte OS, it's a perfect solition but since it doesn't use
Shadow Copy, i'ts not good for backing up the operating system.
