Alternative Browser?

What is your favorite browser alternative to IE? Given the serious security
flaw in IE (see the attached link), I can't continue to use IE in good
conscience until Microsoft finally releases a patch for it. I can't use IE
in the highest security mode as Microsoft now recommends since that breaks a
lot of web sites that I must use.

What do you folks find to be the best alternative with full functions?
Netscape? Opera? Something else?

Thanks....

I downloaded Firefox but it's not happy. Various sites I must use won't work
with it. They pop up a box to download some plug-in for it and proceed to
install it. And then still don't work. Other sites somehow get it to put up
a big menu of plug ins and ask me to select whatever one they secretly want
installed -- how should I know which? A third site wants Sun's Java
installed and leads me half way through the process but somehow it seems to
down load it but not install it.

The positive is that I do like the browser for simple web sites that will
work with it. The negative is that it's totally unusable for me since it
won't work on selected web sites.

I suspect the problem is that the web sites have decided that Firefox is
actually Netscape and are thus loading the wrong plug-ins or something. I
may give up and try Netscape, but I'll play with Firefox some more first.

Thanks for the pointer.

Follow the recommendation on this site. Your browsing experience will
improve.

Important: "So how did I get infected in the first place?"

Actually I have no infection. And I don't want to get one which is why I'm
looking for an alternative browser until Microsoft gets a patch out. There
is no defence against the current virus with IE except to run in the highest
security setting which kills many web sites I must use.
