Alternate network configuration question

As I understand it, the alternate network first looks for
a DHCP server and if it doesn't find one it then assigns
the static address configured under the alternate tab. I
need it to do the opposite on a laptop. We have static
addresses at work and I would like to have it use it's
static address when it's connected to our LAN in the
office. When the user is traveling, most of the other
network connections will be server assigned. Is it
possible to accomplish this without the user having to go
in and reconfigure the network settings each time?
Thanks,
Bob C.

If the network settings have a static IP address, XP will never use a
DHCP address.

These programs let you store multiple network configurations and
switch between them easily:

NetSwitcher

MultiNetwork Manager

It will search for a DHCP server if DHCP is set for the
first configuration and the static is set for the
Alternate configuration, which is what my problem is. We
also have dhcp servers on our network but this laptop
needs to have a static address when it is on our LAN. I
was hoping XP could do it by itself, not with a 3rd party
app. Thanks for the response.
