Alternate characters

I have just borrowed my son's laptop and found that it is set up for
the alternate characters. "P" gives me a hyphen. I realise it's
something to do with keypad characters but I can't remember how to
switch between them.

Can anybody help, please.

It's NumLock. Press the NumLock key, if you have one. Note especially
whether it's color-coded; if so you may need to press the appropriate
color key (such as Fn) at the same time.

Many thanks. It worked a treat.

While I had been waiting I had a lot of fun with the function key. I
just couldn't remember what to press.
