i just reinstalled winxp and the ALT+TAB shortcut now
brings up this big window that shows the thumbnail of the
currently selected window, pressing TAB while holding
down ALT *slowly* moves thru the list of open windows and
paints thumbnails of each.

this is ungodly slow (i know, upgrade your processor!).
the old version i'm used to - the sleeker version - was
lightning quick and was an invaluable shortcut. how can
i get the sleeker version again?!

Have you reinstalled the drivers for your garphics card? Have you checked
the resolution under which you are currently running? Go to Control Panel,
open display, go to the settings tab and see if increasing the screen
resolution helps.

no, its not the same window but bigger, it is a
completely different window, with a picture of the window
that is currently selected filling the left portion of
the pop-up window. if you have a small streamlined
window with just icons on it, then you have the sleeker
version i'm looking for.

i dont understand, i've installed this version of winxp
before and have never seen this window before.

What you're describing sounds like the Alt+Tab PowerToy. You can uninstall
that toy and keep the others. Doing so returns your Alt+Tab window to the
original style and usually restores the better performance as well.

WOW! thank you so much sharon, you hit the nail on the
head. will have to look thru those other powertoy
settings - make sure nothing else is 'inhibiting my power'

if you live in phoenix, your dinner's on me; if you live
elsewhere, well, it may take me a little longer to treat
ya. thanks!

You're very welcome, Dave. Glad to have helped :)
