For years I have been able to use the Alt Key + Calculator Number t
equal a symbol, for some reason it doesn't work anymore. Any advis
welcome. Thank you

It could be your num pad isn't working or perhaps the alt
key. If you have another keyboard to substitute that would
tell you if it is a bad keyboard or something else.

message | It takes a four digit number i.e. Alt 0174 = ®

One possibility for this is that NumLock is off.

Actually, unless you have a special keyboard, it does make a difference. If
there's a Num Lock key, it has to be on. If it's not functional then you
likely have a keyboard problem. Even on my 142 key programmable with
separate keypads, it has to be turned on.

Pop,

The keyboard seems to working OK and with the Num Lock off I can still get ®
using Alt 0174. It's a typical keyboard that came with a Micron computer
some 10 years ago.

BTW, does a 75 year old son work? :-)

Well, shiver me timbers & spank me bum! You're right! I read that, and
said to myself, "Self, that can't be right! Can it? Well, ALT's kind of a
special animal you know!" So Self went off and checked it; yup! It werks!
ALT-numpad works whether the Num Lock is ON of OFF! Hmm, wonder if I can
turn that into a bar bet?

They say you should learn at least one new thing every day; guess I can go
back to bed now!!

PS
If you have a dual keypad keyboard, try pressing the same key sequence
(ALT-0174) on it! Use Notepad to experiment.
It'll look like nothing happens, but as soon as you hit Return, you'll
get what looks like an Asian character! It's: Alt dn/left, left, delete,
up/left on my keyboard! Other combos work too; useless, but interesting!
NO idea where it's coming from; unicode, whatever!
