alt groups in News

I did a search for something in Vista using the Start Search and came across
jpg files on my hard drive. I have on occassion looked at those pretty jpg
files in various alt.whatever in News groups but was surprised to learn that
they had been stored on my hard drive. I did not download them.

Is this the intention of Windows Mail (version 6.00 ... etc. in Vista)?

You could not have viewed them without downloading them.
 
If I would have waited a few minutes I wouldn't have posted the original
message. I looked through Windows Mail (Tools \ Options \ Read) and saw the
option to automatically download any message viewed in the preview pane.
That's going to get a lot of folks in hot water with their boss (or their
wife).
 
As Julian posted, you can not look at an image until it has been downloaded.
