Anyone know anything about this newsgroup?

Seems to have only recently been created, but no posts so far, well apart
from a little spam!

How do you find out who created a newsgroup and why?

The group does not appear to have gone through the official alt.* creation
proceedures, should be ignored by almost all ISP's and have the control message
deleted soon. I've not trawled through alt.config to confirm this but since
support is required in alt.config it would seem to require help from this
group to show that pricelessware is not a duplication of a.c.f. This action
will imo probably make it much harder for someone to create a valid pricelessware
group in future.

I read alt.config and saw nothing about pricelessware. There were many
totally useless threads. I don't see how this process can work, given
the input I saw.

I'm on individual.net, as is andy, but I do not get this group when I
refresh all groups??? Maybe it has already been expunged.

As to discovery, when refreshing groups, any new groups are
distinguished in Free Agent and I imagine other email clients. A quick
scan for interesting new groups is all it takes.

Thanks, I didn't have time during teabreak. Alt.config is a mess but
my ISP Zen checks to see if discussion has taken place.

Zen still have it listed but with zero messages as it's not on their active
feed.

nope. it just hasn't been added by those servers yet as it has just
been added to the isc master newsgroups list
ftp://ftp.isc.org/usenet/CONFIG/ ('newsgroups' is the master list)

verizon will be adding alt.comp.pricelessware later this week. :)

Anybody who knows how to send the control messages can create a new group.
It has nothing to do with alt.config, which seems to have become mainly a
home for trolls, personal wars/vendettas, and spam. The trick is getting
the major ISPs to pick up any new group. If they don't, it's doomed from
the beginning.

official alt.* creation proceedures
no such thing.[/QUOTE]

Yer OK agreed. In the same way as an RFC is not official but
just guidance, there is no obligation to follow its information,
but heck it helps. Several of my past ISP's have only chosen
to carry alt groups after reading alt.config.
Of course some will look at the mess and put a general ban on
all but a few old established alt groups.

The argument given to me is that if someone is prepared to brave the trolls
then they are likely to stay and defend the group - whether the group gets
alt.config support is irrelevant. As you say anyone can make a driveby
control message - even me.

it's doomed from the beginning.

Can't argue with that, it's a leg up. But then look at the uphill battle
that alt.binaries.paint-shop-pro is still fighting.

FWIW I just found alt.comp.pricelessware listed by my ISP but when I tried
to subscribe I got a message saying it was not available. Go figure.

you're right on the money with this post. worth noting - larger isp's
such as verizon add any group which is requested as long as it is
already listed at either the isc or google groups.

Hmm. Just read a very long thread here all about the "creation" process.
Just wondering on my end of the modem (yes, I'm still dialing up, so put
up) as to the *content* difference between comp.freeware and
comp.pricelessware and how that difference could likely sustain a fledgling
newsgroup.

Why would I want to monitor two freeware groups? I tried for awhile with
alt.comp.freeware.discussion ...YAWN. It's not like it's a trendy Freeware
Restaurant that needs to open a "Freeware II" location across town. Damn.
Sorry not a good analogy, as restaurants are not free...maybe a trendy Soup
Kitchen? Yeah, that's it!

Anyway - alt.comp.freeware is all I need. Any others?

Sam

You're not trying hard enough!
You "nead" more!

If all you are interested in is pricelessware, then I would think
a.c.p would be a good place to hang out.
