alphabetizing contacts & address books

Just started using Outlook 2002. I imported my address
book which lists names by "last name, first name". When
I add new contacts, depending on where I look for them,
they are not always listed in alphabetical order
according to last name. For example, when I click
on "contacts" in the folder list, they are "last name,
first name". However, when I click on the address book
icon at "To:" or on the toolbar or in "Tools: Address
Book" any newly created contact is listed "first name
last name". This makes it really hard to find a name
when some are by last name and some are by first.

I did check other postings and found these instructions
for correcting the problem:

Outlook 2002:
Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing
directories or address books > Outlook Address Book >
Change. > Set your sort order there

I followed the directions. They did not solve the
problem.

Stop trying to do any importing. There is nothing you need to import to.
There is no address book in Outlook. The Outlook Address Book is just a view
of your Contacts Folder. You've just managed to disrupt the connection
between the Outlook Address Book and your Contacts Folder(s).
Fix it here:
Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book. If it is not listed, back up one step
and add it. If it is, then click on Change. to make sure ONLY the Contacts
folder(s) you want to display are listed and remove any extra or outdated
references to Contacts Folders. You may need to enable the Contacts Folder
as an e-mail address book by R clicking the Folder > Properties and check
the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart
Outlook after making these changes.

Ok, now I've really screwed things up. I tried the
directions. They didn't work. The fields were named
exactly the same in the address book I imported and the
Outlook 2002 address book.

But now my problem is that in all the things I played
around with yesterday I somehow deleted my ability to
view the contacts when I click on the address book icon
or "Tools: Address Book". I can still see all of my
contacts when I click on "Contacts" in the folder list.
But when I try to select members for a distribution list,
there are no contacts that appear. Likewise when I click
on the address book icon to address an email, nothing
shows up.

I think maybe when I was in the address book at Tools:
Options, I accidentaly removed Contacts. Because now
when I go there "Contacts" is no longer an option to
select when choosing which list to show first.

I've tried to import the address book again, but still
nothing shows up. I've tried to add a personal address
book or an outlook address book under "Tools: Options:"
but it says I already have a personal address book and an
outlook address book. It indicates no addresses are in
either of them and I can't figure out how to import
anything into them.

I seem to have created a bigger problem out of what once
was just an annoying problem.

Please help if you can. I much appreaciate it. Thanks!

The instructions are correct and they work, (unless you configured your File
As... field to be FN, LN). .
Did you restart Outlook?
