XP Home has some kind of virus. I can boot up in normal mode and the mouse
never leaves hourglass when over the taskbar. If I boot with most startup
items disabled I can get up but clicking icons to open windows/programs does
not work. Kind of like a anti-popup program (Which I don't have.) I believe
system came with some kind of antivirus but I can't see it any where right
now. (this is my sister's machine.)

I don't see anything strange in win.ini or in the startup items. I have had
problems with Win98 and instit.bat - natal - basil worms that I can take
care of but not here with XP.

System restore shows no previous good points. I can do a recovery off CD but
don't want to lose all data. That would be a last resort. Does this behavior
seem like any particular type of virus so I can download a removal tool for
it?

thanks very much.

Then you might want to go to eg Symantec.com and do an online scan
Also download Adaware and or SpyBot, update their deffinitions prior to
running
