I seem to ask this question every time I have to rebuild my XP system. This
time I'll try and put the answer where I can find it again.

In Windows Explorer I want to allow the Win98 action of clicking on a selected
directory name in the left pane and go into "rename" mode, without having to use
the right click, click rename.

I know this is possible, but can't find instructions, bad Google Fu, I guess.

After you select an item in the left pane, hit the F2 key.
You should now be able to rename that item.

Good luck

Yes, but -- What I want (and what I had before having to reinstall) is for the
rename procedure in the right pane also work in the left, as it always did in
Win98. That is, if a file name is selected, a second click on it (not so soon
as to be treated as a double-click) high-lights the text of the name and allows
you to change it. As installed, XP only allows this in the right hand pane, not
in the left ("folder") pane. I know it can be changed, but I can't figure out how.

Anyone else?

Thank you very much. I knew that I had asked before, it was just too long ago.
I guess that will teach me to use more explicit subject lines so that I can
find previous answers!

Click once, pause for a second to let the highlight appear over the
name, then click again.

If the first click opens the item instead of highlighting it, click
Tools | Folder Options | General | Double-click to open an item and
then OK.
