All Windows apps not communicating with Network!

I'm connected with a cable modem and the connection is
fine. Dos based apps work and can see the network. Can
ping any site and XP network checks say that everything
passes. All windows apps (explorer, mail, any game server
search app) cannot see the network. The only clue that I
have is that WSftp errors on "cannot create socket". Any
ideas?

Note: Hooked up a laptop and on the laptop everything
worked with the network.

Thanks
C

I have traced several of these problems to improperly configured winsock
LSPs. Run "winmsd" and go to Components/Network/Protocol. Look at the
names in the list, anything with "MSAFD" in it or the "RSVP xxx Service
Provider" should be fine. Anything else is suspect, and uninstalling the
owning program might help.
