Lately I have been getting enormous amounts of similar emails supposedly
from MS (which it is obviously not) with attachment files telling me to
install them.

Why has there been such a recent flood of this garbage. I stopped posting
awhile ago with my real address because this, but I am still getting the
crap. How long do these spam programs keep sending this stuff to the same
addresses for?

Is it using other people's computers to send this stuff? Is it like a worm
that keeps sending itself to other people?

it'll continue as long as people are infected... fortunately it's slowing
from the past two weeks.

Yes. it gets names from any file on the users computer - news posts,
webpages etc. Al of the AV sites have more information about it... here is
one sites take on it http://www.viruslist.com/eng/viruslist.html?id=88029
