Hello, I have a problem with IE on WinXP SP2.

It seems that it considers all pages to be located on My Computer, and
not in the Internet Zone. Consequently, extra security measures are
being applied, and so it prompts me with the information bar for every
single javascript.

Does anybody know how I could get around this?

I have the same problem, but for the pages located on my computer.

The problem may be that somehow entries in your registry have been changed.
You will need to have a good knowledge of the registry to make these changes
and I would suggest that you refer the problem to your support staff if
possible. They may also be the cause of the problem if your computer is
networked and administered centrally.

The Registry Key for Zones is

HKCU \Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0-4,
"DisplayName"
Where Zone\3 = Internet, 0=My Computer etc
and
DisplayName is what is displayed in the Internet Options dialog.

So what appears to have happened in your case is that the display name of
"Internet" has been assigned to the Zone #0 =My Computer

I am not sure if repairing IE will correct the problem for you. I can only
imagine that your network administrator (or your ISP if you are using a
branded version of IE) has made this booboo. Ask them in the first instance.

If you know how check your registry under this key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones

and that you have Zones 0-4 and they are correctly labeled.

Thanks for your reply. FYI, I'm not on a local network, and this is my
personal computer.

I have zones 0-4, and they are labeled "My Computer", "Local Intranet",
"Trusted Sites", "Internet", and "Restricted Sites", both under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (but I don't have any zones
inder HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG). So everything seems to be OK there, I guess.

Still, all pages I visit, except for IE's own error pages, are in the
"My Computer" zone.

For now, I get around the annoyance by enabling active content to run on
files on My Computer as well, but I guess it's not very safe to leave it
that way.

mmm very strange Martin... are the zones correctly labeled
0=My Computer
1=Local Intranet
2=Trusted Site
3=Internet
4=Restricted Sites

This is the only place where the names and numbers that match the named
Zones could get muddled up. I don't know any other reason for your problem
to occur.

FYI there is a quick and easy way to change your security settings on the
fly... just double-click on the Zones Icon on the Status bar... this will
open up the Zones dialog and you can use the slider control to change to
high, medium or low.. As a rule I surf with a high security level and flip
back to a medium once I am satisfied that there is nothing malicious. Most
commercial sites do not have a malicious intent. Usually its a scam...
something for nothing that lures you in.

If you are using XP you can doulble click on the Popup icon on the status
bar as well to toggle your popup blocker as well.. While running with a high
security level you do not need a popup blocker as all scripting is disabled.

Please post back here if you find the cause.. 3m.

Yes, they are. However, on the security tab under Internet options, I
only have four icons for zones. The one for My Computer is missing. Is
that the way it should be?

Anyway, I don't normally use IE for browsing, so I suspect that it's not
too risky to have the "allow active content on my computer" option
checked. That way, javascript doesn't get blocked, and friends who want
to use IE don't get annoyed...

Anyway, thanks for your help. I'll see if I can find another solution to
the problem.
