all preferences deleted at restart

I was recently trying to update AIM and noticed that
after I restarted the computer any changes I had made,
e.g: updating AIM, changing the background on the
desktop, deleting programs, etc were all gone and it
returned to the previous state. Is there any way that I
can correct this? Thank you for you time.
 
Did you do this from an account that is an Administrator account or a
Limited account. If it is a Limited account, you need to change it to an
Administrator account to make such changes.

Try using System Restore to take you back to a time prior to when this
started. Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore.
