Hi,

Using Windows Mail which was working fine this morning. Installed the
recommended MS updates this afternoon, WM started running very slowly
(taking 3-5 seconds to change message when clicked) now every e-mail
and newsgroup message shows name and subject, but the content is
completely blank. I can open them up, and the content is stored as an
attachment, eg AT000223.html AT000223.txt, which I then have to save
(if I click either attachment, I get "file not found" error), then I
can open it up and read the mail.

I have read and tried the fixes where I changed the "read messages in
plain text" option, and the encoding options, still the same. I've
done the maintenance on the folders, I've also emptied the temporary
Internet files as a forum post suggested, still nothing.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem? Thanks for any help.

An update: I deleted the entire "temp" folder from my user profile and
WM stopped "lagging".. I rebooted and the mails and messages were back
to normal (although the text of them is bigger than it used to be, but
that should be fairly simple to fix).

Maybe this can help someone else who's having the same problem!

Which antivirus are you running? Some of them cause problems with
Windows Mail over time, or when an update occurs.
You may want to do a trial uninstall of your antivirus, reboot, then
test Windows Mail again. If no improvement, try running the various
repair functions in the WMUtil program:

I was using AVG, but I uninstalled it earlier because of these issues
and the 0x800C013A errors. I've had it for nearly a year without
problems, but most of the posts I read blamed the A/V software for
most issues. It didn't help though, and I even d/loaded & ran the AVG
"removal" software just to make sure it was gone. Fortunately I've got
everything back to normal so I will re-install another antivirus. I
managed to solve the 0x800C013A issue too (see above), but I thought
I'd post it here in case it helps someone else. It's a real pain where
people post about a problem, then drop a reply to say "hey, it's great
I fixed it, Bye!" without telling anyone what they actually did to fix
it!

I installed all 20 MS updates earlier, I ended up having to do them
manually 1-at-a-time as it failed on me twice and removed them
twice... along with all the reboots, it's possible something got
messed up somewhere. It even had the cheek at one point to tell me my
Vista wasn't genuine! I had to go to the MS site and validate it
again.

Thanks for reporting back.
I believe one of the Windows Updates of a few months ago corrects
the problem of the Temp folder becoming too full.

If you're in the market for a new antivirus, I highly recommend the
free one from Microsoft. It has given me no problems whatsoever,
which I can't say for any of the others I have tried.
