I discovered that all the folders on all my harddrives
have become read-only and even as the local
administrator, removing the read-only sttribute does not
stick.

I had just let windows update apply two or three hotfixes
(I don't know which ones or I would uninstall them)

Help!

Hi Ted,

Check Add & Remove for recently installed hotfixes, though not all can be
removed.

If you suspect it was a recent Windows Update, you might also try a System
Restore to an earlier date.

Is there a square marking or a check mark in the box for Read Only? If it
is a square marking, the folder is not read only. It is in an
"indeterminate" state meaning NTFS is in force on this system and some
files within the folder *may* be controlled by policies or permissions or
even the read only bit.

NOTE: Even if you find that the folder is read only, this is a setting that
applications should ignore. Windows uses a "read only" marking on some
folders to denote other functions (folder customizations for example).
