As of recently my Internet explorer, msn messenger, windows media player, and
windows in genral havent been running right. Msn messenger simply wont run,
my windows update will not allow me to update anything, my system restore
which i tried, somehow after i restarted all of the restore points are gone.
Along with all of these WMP will open but only to a blank window and I cannot
open any media. When i try to open a internet explorer window i click must
attempt to open 2 windows for one to come up (double clicking it once does
not work although the hour glass shows on the mouse, i must double click it
again and then only sometimes it works) Anyone got any idea other than im
totally screwed and need to reformat?
Thanks
Troy
Windows XP SP1
AMD 64 3200
Asus K8v Deluxe
1.5gig of ram
Ati Radeon 9800 all in wonder pro

P.S. I have had this computer for over a 2 years now and have never ran into
a problem such as this. Virus scans (Norton) and spybot scans show nothing.

You might try system file checker first.
If no go, start in Safe Mode see if that helps.
No sp2?

What version of Norton is your computer infested with, and is it fully
up to date? Norton products are fraught with problems.

Also while Spybot Search and Destroy is a pretty good program it is
far from infallible, as are virtually all other antispyware products.
Most experts agree that you need a combination of several different
antispyware products plus an occasional "second opinion" from still
others in order to keep your system clean.

Ad-Aware (www.lavasoft.de) is usually considered as a good companion
for Spybot as it uses a different detection algorithm and therefore
one of them will often detect thing that the other one misses.

For the "second opinion" I most often use Trend Micro's free online
scanner at http://housecall.trendmicro.com although there are a number
of other similar sites such as www.bitdefender.com or
www.kaspersky.com

Also you have not kept your Windows XP up to date. When
vulnerabilities are discovered and patches released to fix them these
are invariably followed in very short order by malware designed
specifically to exploit that specific vulnerability. So by not
installing Service Pack 2 (and presumably also not installing the 40
plus critical updates issued since SP2 was release) you are leaving
yourself pretty wide open to exploitation.

I suggest that you either download the complete Service Pack 2 update
from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en
or order it on CD from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Also see http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm for advice on
planning and preparing for the installation of SP2.

Good luck

Ron:

Totally agree ... my cousin was going to chuck her system because it was so
slow and nothing seemed to work right.
After she gave it to me, and I upgraded her to SP2 and the remaining 62
patches and upgrades, she couldn't believe it was the same system.

Everything worked, fast (upgrading her from 64MB to 256MB helped as well),
but Event Viewer was silent for the first time in 2 years.

DEFINITELY, keep your system updated.

Troy:

When you say that Windows Update won't work, what error do you get? You may
try cleaning out the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution Folder ... sometimes,
in the past, the database got so hosed, Windows Update would not update.

You need to Start/Stop two processes (in Services) in order to cleanup
SoftwareDistribution.

Hopefully, you can access the internet to get the SP2 patch ... it's quite
large to download.
