I have tried 2 x HP PSC Series units (different models)
and now I have bought a Lexmark X1150 - and none of them
will work with my Laptop running XP Home, they all fail to
install and fall over at the same place when trying to
install the driver. All units have set up ok on my works
Laptop running Windows 2000 Pro. Also, 2 x Deskjets have
worked on on my Laptop running XP, it's just the All in
one's that won't. I spent a week on the phone to HP trying
everything under the Sun, and they couldn't resolve the
issue. I would be very grateful if anyone could help.
Basically I have known good USB ports, known good All in
one's, but they just don't seem to work together on my
Laptop running XP - and they all fail at the same point
when the Driver cannot be installed - they are always
detected from a Hardware perspective.

But the software MUST be installed BEFORE the hardware is connected.... so I
do not understand your last statement at all...
"and they all fail at the same point
when the Driver cannot be installed - they are always
detected from a Hardware perspective"

At this point, you should unisntall ANYTHING that you have managed to
install as regards printers and start from scratch. DISCONNECT any and all
printers from the PC.

Since one of the units is a Lexmark, follow Bruce Sanderson's instructions
at
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm
and pay particular attention to his special section on Lexmark printers.

Once this is all complete reboot the PC.

Download a new set of the installation package from the website of the
printer manufacturer of whichever printer you want to install.

Ensure you are logged on as an Administrator or a User with Admin Rights.

Install the software and DO NOT connect the printer until the software TELLS
YOU TO DO SO!

Hi, what I mean is that on all the units the installation
instructions tell you to connect the USB cables at both
ends - then after the Install new Hardware Wizard detects
the unit, put in the supplied CD and let the Wizard search
for the Driver - which it always fails to find.

Are you saying that the Driver should be installed before
the Unit is connected? I can give it a go but this is not
indicated on any of the installation instructions that
came with the 3 units. They all said (and had diagrams
showing) that the unit be connected before the Driver is
installed.

I also forgot to mention, I had been through the offered
suggestions when I had the 2 x HP Units. HP Support had me
editing the Registry, downloading HP clean-up utilities,
etc. I even ran the HP online install (all 166mb) to get
the latest S/W but this also failed at the same point so I
know the issue is not the CD or some odd fault with the
Drive. I'm also logged on as Administrator. I'm now
desperate for help - I manage around 70 Techies, and so
far had nobody that can come up with anything that hasn't
been tried - the only suggestion was a complete rebuild of
my Laptop, but with around 35GB data I don't really want
that as an option!

It's a pain, it won't let me install it as it says that
it's not connected and stops the install....
