I just bought myself a Epson DX3800 - seems pretty good, however, as I
expected because I connect the print via a print server, the twain/scan
element does not work.

Is there a way I can connect the scanner element of it dir to the local
machines USB but the prin element of it to the print server so I can use
them both without messing about with cables etc?

I was thinking some kind of 'Y' usb cable F to MM so I can take each of
the Males to 1) print server 2)local machine usb port for scanning.

Any suggestions on what this is called (if it's available) and if it's a
proved solution or ways to get this to work without messing with connections
(low cost) would be greatly appriciated.

Cheers
Stu

Are you using the print server so that you can share the printer
portion or is the printer far from the computer? If the former, I
suggest connecting the Epson (CX3800?) directly to the computer via USB
and then using the computer to share.

A USB device only expects to be connected to 1 host at any given time.
There are some USB switches that enable to two hosts (e.g. a print
server and a computer) to connect to one or more devices. I'm not sure
if that saves that much time over unplugging and replugging. Checkout

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the reply.

I have a print server so I can use my laptop wirelessly downstairs to print
stuff off so I really do need to keep this in the loop. My main desktop
machine is next to the printer (so that I can use the scanner when I get it
working).

I don't want to have to turn on the main desktop machine just to print stuff
out - hence why I bought the print server.

I'l check out usb switches but if anyone else has any suggestions that would
be coool.

Cheers

Don't know about Epson, but with the HP All-in-Ones to get scanning
over the network you have to use a model with built-in networking (all
the medium-price and up these days). Print servers can only give you
printing.

You install the printer software on every PC that needs access and
indicate you're making a network connection.
