All I'm getting are those dreaded RED X's!

I've used WMM for months. A couple of times when I go to download video from
my SD card I can view the entire clip but when I go to upload the clip not
all of it is there! So I then transfer the entire file from the card to CD.
Pull up my MM program and yes the entire clip is there (in segments) but
when I go to drag the clips down to edit and put together all I'm getting are
those nasty RED X's!

Why can I view it but not download it to the program? HELP!

If you prefer not to import your video in segments....
uncheck "Create clips fpr video files" on your
Import File screen.

The Red Xs indicate that the source file has been
moved or deleted from the location it was originally
imported from.

Your best bet would be to download the files to a
folder on your hard drive before viewing or importing
into Movie Maker.

For the most part I understood what you said to do. BUT could you put that
in laymens terms...... step by step?

I think it is a matter of getting organized :-)

First of all, the video exsts as a file in the SD card?
When you transfer it to your PC, do you just copy over the file?

When I get video clips to use with MM Iusually follow a somewhat
methodic (and boring) procedure:

1. I define my data drive, for example D:
2. I create a folder structure in my data drive, such as d:\projects\videos
3. I create a folder specific for the new project, such as d:\projects\videos\party
4. Inside the new folder I create more folders, such as Images and Videos
5. I get the video clip that I'll be using in MM and save/copy it to the Videos folder
d:\projects\videos\party\Videos)
6. I start up MM and having the Videos folder open in a windows explorer I drag
the video file into MM. It should be included in a collection.
7. I then drag the video in collections to the time line and edit accordingly.
8. I save the MM project to the d:\projects\videos\party
9. I create a Notepad file reminfind myself the name of the folder mentioned in 8.
10. When done with the project I burn the contents of d:\projects\videos\party to CD

If I ever need to come back to this project I need to copy them from the CD into
an identical folder structure or MM will not find the source file when you open your
project. So if the notes I made with NotePad (or any other text editor) say that my
project folder is d:\projects\videos\party and I copy the files to d:\projects\party MM
will give me a few red Xes.

As John says, the red Xes happen because the source files for your project are
not found and this happens because they get copied, moved or deleted. So if your
source file came from d:\projects\videos\party\Videos, it better be there when you
reopen the project in the future.. or else Red Xes!

I hope this helps, Saga

What exactly needs exaplining?

I have a similar issue however, I see no Red X's. Yet when I go to publish
the program errors saying that source files are not found. Yesterday I went
through and deleted all imported audio, did not resolve. Then I continued to
delete ALL photes/videos and it still would not publish... there were no
files!

I have gone through the movie picture by picture checking to see if it would
search for source file... I have no idea what to do...

I have worked on putting this together for 8 months... it's holds my son's
first year... now he's 15 months and I can't get it to publish for family...
I'm very frustrated and need any help I can get...

I have a similar issue. I imported a 30 minute movie (.avi) of a junior high
football game and called it "FullGame" in the collections. I then previewed
it from the collection and Split it there, which created two items in the
collections. For example, I wanted the first 5 minutes to become
"StartOfGame". When I Split it, the new clip appeared in Collections. I named
it appropriately and still had "FullGame". I did that about 10 times, each
time placing the new clips into the Storyboard in random order. I published,
but only 75% was in the resulting movie. I took a break, never closing WMM,
and when I started again about 8 hours later, I could no longer view the
Collections (all black boxes in the viewer). The project was saved, so I
closed WMM and then reopened the project. The missing clips from the
Storyboard now appear, but all of the Collections (including FullGame) are
Red X's - Files not found. Before starting I created a new folder for the
project in my user/videos folder, which is where the FullGame clip was stored.

Is there any way to create the Collections from the clips in the Storyboard?
Otherwise my only options appear to be (1) start over, (2) use the published
movie and edit it and then use the original to redo the missing clips.

Sorry for the long post, but this appears to be a program bug and usually
the details are required to recreate it. I found that this can be recreated
- unfortunately. Using Vista 32-bit, DMM 6.0 SP1.

It's always best if you create a new thread
when you have a question.

One thing is unclear...where is the 'original'
copy of the "FullGame" video clip stored?
Do you have it saved in a folder on your hard
drive?

Yes, the original "FullGame" clip is on the hard drive in the folder I
created for the project. I started by creating the directory structure,
opened MM, and then imported it.

Ok...your original .avi may not be fully
compatible with Movie Maker (there are
many types of .avi files.)

There's a chance that you could convert
the .avi file to .wmv and your problems
might go away. But you would have to
recreate the project.

The following software can be used to
convert the file:

Windows Media Encoder 9 Series

or...
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx

The following article should offer enough
info to get the conversion done.
