Am using IE6. When I see a web page I'd like to save... I'd like to do
"save as" and keep a permanent snapshot (in one file) of this page so it can
be brought up later with no Internet connection and even if the page is
taken down later (removed from the Internet, server, etc.).

And, I'd like this in one file, not a bunch of files with subfolders and gif
images.

Is it true that "Save As" Web Page Complete (html) will do this? And I
don't have to be connected to the Internet?

What about "Save As" Web Archive (mht)? What's the purpose/difference in
this one?

Thanks,
George

George -

You will need to save them as an .mht web archive file to see the text and
graphics in their entirety when off-line. Naturally, none of the links will
work until you have re-opened your internet connection though. This will
save the page as one complete item without the separate folder and file
deal.

Saving as web page complete (.html) gives you separate folders and files.
That seems to not be what you want. Note that saving a web page as .mht uses
lots more bytes as opposed to other alternatives.

Saving as web page HTML only will save only the page layout and text - but
not the images.

A little experimentation; fast and easy to see your results, will help you.

Hi. ;-)

Thanks Jan. I'm still a bit busy with the other stuff, but we've pretty much
finished all of the pre-prep-preparations (heh!), so all that's left to do
is to do it; then clean up any mess; then de-brief; then catch a breath and
try to resume the position. :-D So, basically, this is but a temporary
"cameo appearance" until the dust settles. :-) I had a question or two which
I posed in a couple of other NG's, but naturally.... no reply. :-\\ <grumble
grunt>

Talk atcha soon. Take care now. ;-)

Well have a great time! I'll get home from vacation on Sunday (5th), so
I'll be back in the mix here soon too. I'm really looking forward to it,
I've sure missed everyone here. :-))

I'll be concluding my event by about that time, so we'll see you here, ....
and there. <wink>
BTW, very funny stuff I saw somewhere else today. ;-D

Thank you, greatly appreciate the super-clear response. Yep, works great.
Only remaining issue I am seeming is sometimes there's a message about
"won't save or can't save web page" when mht is chosen...seems to happen on
eBay and on some newsletters am receiving, is there a workaround to get it
to save and still have a complete flat file, thanks

Hi George,

That's because the way in which some pages are written precludes saving them
as you'd like.

Error Message: This Web Page Could Not Be Saved
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;235589&Product=ie600

The only workarounds I know are to save it by making a shortcut to desktop
and placing it where you want. Maybe, I've forgotten now 'cause its been a
while, you can re-open the page, then when off-line, try saving it as an
..MHT from your cache. Not sure if this will work though. Try it next time
you encounter such an instance.

Another cumbersome workaround is to save it in MS Word as a Word document.
Then you have all the links, images, .etc. But it is slightly cumbersome,
sort of slow to open, and fairly weighty. Plus you have to manipulate the
layout to achieve exactly what you want.

I prefer shortcuts as a general rule; they are very small in size. The
drawback is obvious though. Depending on what you are trying to achieve, one
may well save the important text as a WordPad or Notepad item for permanence
if that is what you're interested in. Images must be saved as a .jpg or
something. But then, you don't have the "one flat" as you referred to it.
:-)

Incidentally, the above page (URL) saved in various formats:
Saved as a shortcut = 358 Bytes
Saved as a .HTML only = 20 KB
Saved as Web Page Complete (htm.) - two components = 96.4 KB folder + 28.6
KB file = 125 KB
Saved as .mht file = 139 KB

HTH - and, you are most welcome George. <s>
