"All fax printers are inaccessible" after Remove-then-Add Fax Serv

I hope you can solve this problem. It seems different than the similar
problems discussed in previous postings.

MY SETUP
PC: Brand new, Toshiba Satellite M105-S3041 (September 2006)
OS: XP Home Edition
Modem: Toshiba Software Modem, by Agere

RELEVANT HISTORY, AND PROBLEM
1.
I tried using Fax for first time today.
Dialling rules seemed to work correctly for the first fax attempt; but to
make the fax go I would have to lengthen the time delay between dialling the
access number for my calling card and dialling the destination number.
After I lengthened the time delay, the calling card voice-greeting didn't
come through after the "ring tone" stopped.

2.
After browsing around the www, I used Add/Remove Windows Components, to
remove Fax Services.
Then, I restarted the PC.
Then, I added Fax Services
Then (after a long period of "Refreshing"), Fax Console states: All fax
printers are inaccessible.
Also, Tools/Fax Printers Status states (about "Local" Fax Printer):
Status Unavailable.

Then, Printer Properties error message states:
The Microsoft Shared Fax Driver printer driver is not installed on this
computer. Some printer properties will not be accessible unless you install
the printer driver. Do you want to install the driver now?
However, the subsequently appearing Add Printer Driver Wizard does not list
a driver with that description.

Then, the subsequently appearing Fax Properties / Sharing states (about the
Fax printer): Sharing is not supported for this type of printer.

3.
After more browsing the www, I launched (and Merged) faxfix.reg, and
received a confirmation message.

After all that, I still the same inoperable status of Win XP Fax.
 
Why did you remove and reinstall the Fax Service? What is the original
source of your Windows XP installation files? Faxfix.reg would not apply
unless you were running Windows XP before SP1, and no brand new computer
runs that.
You've really been flailing about here and it is hard to know how to undo
the damage without a better understanding of what you did.
 
I have to echo Russ, why would you remove and install the Fax service when
it appears it was working? The symptoms you list suggest your security
database may be corrupt. Many users who have updated an older version of
Windows XP to SP2 before they try to install the fax service or who attempt
to reinstall fax on an SP2 system appear to be encountering a problem
installing it. In these cases there is no error message during the
installation (distinguishing this from the very common problem where the
installation routine states it cannot find the necessary files). The
installation appears to proceed without error, but when it is over there is
no fax printer apparent and any attempt to send a fax results in the error
message "Fax server information cannot be retrieved. The Fax Wizard will now
close." This problem appears to occur because the security data base is
corrupted as documented here:

You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP

Note that this article describes a hotfix that users can obtain that might
fix the problem and that Microsoft does NOT recommend simply running the
Esentutl.exe utility to recover from security database corruption.

You can either:

1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft
usually waives any charges for support calls to get supported hotfixes
listed in Knowledge Base articles.

2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB
article to recover from security database corruption:

To answer your question, unwisely, I removed Fax Services based on an
unwarranted combination of the following:
(a) a section headed "Troubleshooting Fax Services" at

(b) the first line under the heading "1. How do I install the Windows XP Fax
Services?" at http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/FAQFAX.htm#_Toc88835131

That first line I'm referring to reads: "Windows XP Fax is not installed by

Eventually (and still in time, I hope), I stumbled upon referals to this
newsgroup, in "HOW TO: Troubleshoot Common Fax Problems in Microsoft Windows
XP", at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321639

[I'm learning now after all that sometimes excellent support for specific
problems is available from discussion/news groups. I acted in haste because
my initial searching the knowledge base etc didn't reveal any good match with
my problem, yet it appeared that there were a couple of common and very
similar problems with Fax, and handy solutions to them. Too often, my
(lonely) experience has been that the most help I've found for many software
problems came from such Do-It-Yourself "best efforts" based on advice for
similar problems. Please believe me, if I can get good specific advice I'm
happy to follow it.]

In my original posting, I tried to be pretty specific about what I did (in
my flailing).
If you need more precision, please let me know where.

The only additional thing I did was the following sequence, which was the
recommended solution to the problem "all fax printers are inaccessible" in a
newsgroup posting I can't locate at the moment. Here's the sequence (in my
own style):
Right-click MyComputer/Manage/Services and Applications/Services/double
click on Fax/click on Log On tab/Select the "This Account" radio
button/Browse for and enter the name of my local (user) directory/Enter and
confirm the password for my local directory/Click on OK

Russ, I see Hal Hostetler has also posted a response. Would you mind
guiding me about what to follow out of several help responses, please?

These instructions will NOT work in any version of Windows XP and will
render the Fax service inoperable. If you have the Fax service set this
way, you must go back and reselect the Local System Account. I must add
that, based on the above information, my comments on database corruption may
well not apply at all.

Sorry for the delay. I recall selecting "Notify me of replies", but I
didn't receive any notification of your response.

You ask about my Windows XP version and source of installation files.
I am using Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2.
My PC came (from Toshiba only a month ago) already loaded with that version
of Windows XP Home Edition.

Regarding source of installation files:
A disc that came with the PC is called "Toshiba Recovery and
Applications/Drivers DVD"; and that disc bears a paper Microsoft certificate
that mentions Microsoft OneNote 2003. The only other disc that came with
the PC is Win DVD Creator Platinum 2.

After I removed Fax Services using Add/Remove Programs, I simply used
Add/Remove PRograms to add Fax Services back again.

By the way, today I have followed Hal Hostetler's suggestion to go back in
and select "Local System Account" under
MyComputer/Manage/Services and Settings/Services/Fax.

Right-click MyComputer/Manage/Services and Applications/Services/double
click on Fax/click on Log On tab/Select the "This Account" radio
button/Browse for and enter the name of my local (user) directory/Enter
and
confirm the password for my local directory/Click on OK

Russ, I see Hal Hostetler has also posted a response. Would you mind
guiding me about what to follow out of several help responses, please?

source of your Windows XP installation files? Faxfix.reg would not
apply
unless you were running Windows XP before SP1, and no brand new
computer
runs that.
You've really been flailing about here and it is hard to know how to
undo

OS: XP Home Edition
Modem: Toshiba Software Modem, by Agere

RELEVANT HISTORY, AND PROBLEM

I tried using Fax for first time today.
Dialling rules seemed to work correctly for the first fax attempt;
but
to
make the fax go I would have to lengthen the time delay between
dialling
the
access number for my calling card and dialling the destination
number.
After I lengthened the time delay, the calling card voice-greeting
didn't
come through after the "ring tone" stopped.

2.
After browsing around the www, I used Add/Remove Windows Components,
to
remove Fax Services.
Then, I restarted the PC.
Then, I added Fax Services
Then (after a long period of "Refreshing"), Fax Console states: All
fax
printers are inaccessible.
Also, Tools/Fax Printers Status states (about "Local" Fax Printer):
Status Unavailable.

Then, Printer Properties error message states:
The Microsoft Shared Fax Driver printer driver is not installed on
this
computer. Some printer properties will not be accessible unless you
install
the printer driver. Do you want to install the driver now?
However, the subsequently appearing Add Printer Driver Wizard does
not
list
a driver with that description.

Then, the subsequently appearing Fax Properties / Sharing states
(about
the
Fax printer): Sharing is not supported for this type of printer.

3.
After more browsing the www, I launched (and Merged) faxfix.reg,
and
received a confirmation message.

After all that, I still the same inoperable status of Win XP Fax.

When I add (or is it try to add) Fax Services using Add/Remove Windows
Components, the WIndows Components Wizard appears, with the checkbox for Fax
Services checked just as I checked it when I removed Fax Services using the
same wizard.
The Wizard appears to run smoothly and to complete, and does not prompt me
for anything.

Then you most likely have an issue with the location of your installation
files that only your OEM can resolve.

Hi Russ

I followed the direction you gave me and discussed the issue with Toshiba
Technical Support. They gave me two options:
(a) use System Restore (from Start/All Programs/Accessories/System
Tools/System Restore) to restore Win XP to a configuration it was in before I
removed Fax Services; and
(b) resinstall WIn XP.
Needless, to say, I used System Restore, and reverted to the configuration
of Win XP on 12 October (a full 7 days before I removed Fax Services).

Now, would you help me with what happens now when I try to send a fax with
the following Calling-Card Dialing-Rules, please?:
"Dial the access number.
Wait for a voice message to end.
Dial the area code and number."

- The access number (for the calling card srvice) is dialed, but does not
ring.
- Immediately after the access number has been dialed, I hear the beginning
of a sequence of on-off-on long beeps of the "sending fax machine", followed
very quickly by three beeps in rapid succession (lasting less than half a
second together, I'd estimate).
- After an estimated ten seconds of hearing the on-and-off tone of the
sending fax machine, I hear a click that sounds like a phone line being
disconnected.
- The on-and-off tone of the sending fax machine continues.

I accidentally omitted, that before the "click" that sounds like a phone line
being disconnected, I hear six beeps in rapid succession, lasting an
estimated 1 second togther. The on-and-off tone of the sending fax machine
continues afterwards. Eventually, a recording from the local phone company
is heard: "If you'd like to dial a number, please hang up and try again".

problems is available from discussion/news groups. I acted in haste
because
my initial searching the knowledge base etc didn't reveal any good
match
with
my problem, yet it appeared that there were a couple of common and
very
similar problems with Fax, and handy solutions to them. Too often,
my
(lonely) experience has been that the most help I've found for many
software
problems came from such Do-It-Yourself "best efforts" based on
advice
for
similar problems. Please believe me, if I can get good specific
advice
I'm
happy to follow it.]

did

The only additional thing I did was the following sequence, which
was
the
recommended solution to the problem "all fax printers are
inaccessible"
in a
newsgroup posting I can't locate at the moment. Here's the sequence
(in
my
own style):
Right-click MyComputer/Manage/Services and
Applications/Services/double
click on Fax/click on Log On tab/Select the "This Account" radio
button/Browse for and enter the name of my local (user)
directory/Enter
and
confirm the password for my local directory/Click on OK

Russ, I see Hal Hostetler has also posted a response. Would you
mind
guiding me about what to follow out of several help responses,
please?

source of your Windows XP installation files? Faxfix.reg would not
apply
unless you were running Windows XP before SP1, and no brand new
computer
runs that.
You've really been flailing about here and it is hard to know how

undo

PC: Brand new, Toshiba Satellite M105-S3041 (September
2006)
OS: XP Home Edition
Modem: Toshiba Software Modem, by Agere

RELEVANT HISTORY, AND PROBLEM
1.
I tried using Fax for first time today.
Dialling rules seemed to work correctly for the first fax
attempt;
but
to
make the fax go I would have to lengthen the time delay between
dialling
the
access number for my calling card and dialling the destination
number.
After I lengthened the time delay, the calling card
voice-greeting
didn't
come through after the "ring tone" stopped.

2.
After browsing around the www, I used Add/Remove Windows
Components,
to
remove Fax Services.
Then, I restarted the PC.
Then, I added Fax Services
Then (after a long period of "Refreshing"), Fax Console states:
All
fax
printers are inaccessible.
Also, Tools/Fax Printers Status states (about "Local" Fax
Printer):
Status Unavailable.

Then, Printer Properties error message states:
The Microsoft Shared Fax Driver printer driver is not installed
on
this
computer. Some printer properties will not be accessible unless
you
install
the printer driver. Do you want to install the driver now?
However, the subsequently appearing Add Printer Driver Wizard
does
not
list
a driver with that description.

Then, the subsequently appearing Fax Properties / Sharing states
(about
the
Fax printer): Sharing is not supported for this type of printer.

3.
After more browsing the www, I launched (and Merged) faxfix.reg,
and
received a confirmation message.

- The access number (for the calling card srvice) is dialed, but does not
ring.
- Immediately after the access number has been dialed, I hear the
beginning
of a sequence of on-off-on long beeps of the "sending fax machine",
followed
very quickly by three beeps in rapid succession (lasting less than half a
second together, I'd estimate).
- After an estimated ten seconds of hearing the on-and-off tone of the
sending fax machine, I hear a click that sounds like a phone line being
disconnected.
- The on-and-off tone of the sending fax machine continues.

Hello Russ

Sorry for the delay. I recall selecting "Notify me of replies", but
I
didn't receive any notification of your response.

You ask about my Windows XP version and source of installation
files.
I am using Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2.
My PC came (from Toshiba only a month ago) already loaded with that
version
of Windows XP Home Edition.

Regarding source of installation files:
A disc that came with the PC is called "Toshiba Recovery and
Applications/Drivers DVD"; and that disc bears a paper Microsoft
certificate
that mentions Microsoft OneNote 2003. The only other disc that
came
with
the PC is Win DVD Creator Platinum 2.

After I removed Fax Services using Add/Remove Programs, I simply
used
Add/Remove PRograms to add Fax Services back again.

By the way, today I have followed Hal Hostetler's suggestion to go
back
in
and select "Local System Account" under
MyComputer/Manage/Services and Settings/Services/Fax.
