All Excel files based on one template open as read only!!

Can anyone please help me to resolve a snag with my work files. I use a
template to record visits for work and when I open the said template it
opens as read only. When I try to save with a new name I get the message
that "Document saved successfully. Cannot be re-opened due to low memory.
Please close the document". If I then reopen it I get another read only
document. The template is not protected, indeed I have tried applying
protection in a vain attempt to sort it out. If I open documents not based
on the template they do not open as read only and I can do with them as I
wish successfully. Your help is much appreciated.

If you do not get an answer, try posting to microsoft.public.excel.newusers.
Suggest you include your Excel version.

Make sure the template is not marked as read-only and that is has an
extension of .xlt(not .xls)
