The problem is almost certainly that your system has too many to fit
into the default Windows icon cache. Deleting the cache, or using the
Tweakui repair function may temporarily fix this, but the fix will be
more permanent if you also increase the cache size.

You can increase and purge the icon cache using the free ActivIcons
utility from http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_ai.html

1-- go to its "Desktop Controls" screen and increase the icon cache
size to at least 2048, and then

2-- rebuild the icon cache. The options for rebuilding the cache are
on 2 small round buttons at the lower/right corner. Shut down any
programs running in the background, then click the round button
farthest to the lower/right corner (your system will reboot, and the
icon cache will be cleaned out).

Or you can increase the cache size by manually inserting a key into
the registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer

here you need to add the key "Max Cached Icons" with a value of 2048
or higher.

I swear by a system app called TuneUp Utilitie 2003 (www.tuneup.de). It can
change any system setting, including your icons and has repair functions.

You can download a trial version but it is not too expensive if you like it.

| Why not?

IIRC, usually because corrupted icons are re-written into the cache
before you exist Windows (though perhaps not in the same locations).
In Win9x, you could boot to MSDOS and then delete it from there, since
the cache was not loaded. The cache would then rebuilt after you
booted into Windows and then existed normally. George's method tricks
Windows into re-reading the icons from within Windows.

"Been doing it for years with not a single problem."

- That is one reason why not. You should never have to do it. But once you start doing it you'll be doing it for years.
What I have told you is NOT something I arrived at by myself. I was told not to do it by a Support Professional in W2K and ever since I listened to him I never have the issue that influenced me to do it in the first place.

I didn't mean doing it on MY own PC for years, but for friends when
they had the problem. A quick delete of that file and all was well.

But I do see the value of doing it the other way, and in fact I'm
going to write a quick app to automate the task.

Oh?

Changes to Desktop Objects Are Not Displayed Properly
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;216165&Product=win2000

To re-create the cache file for desktop objects:

At a command prompt, change to the %SystemRoot% folder.
Type attrib -h shelliconcache, and then press ENTER.
Type del shelliconcache, and then press ENTER.
Click Start, click Log Off Username (where Username is the name you used
to log on), and then click Yes.
Log back on to your computer.
