all calendar entries missing

All entries into my calendar (personal folder) have disappeared. The entries
in the archived calendar are still there -- up to one year ago and back.
Luckily I do have my calendar synched with my smartphone, but I'm afraid to
synch back to the desktop until I know what happened. I've rebooted several
times - no luck.

Things don't happen by magic. What changed on your PC just before the data
"went missing"?
 
Truly nothing. I was away from my desktop for several days on a business
trip. Before I left, I synched to my smart phone, but did not change any
settings. The calendar page is also doing something else strange: When I
open the "Outlook Help" pane, and try to enter something in the "Search for"
space, it refuses to accept the typing. Instead, whatever I type is being
entered as a new appointment on the calendar itself. Actually, that's
happening on all the Outlook screens -- Mail, Calendar, Contacts, etc. Any
entry in the Help pane search window is not accepted, but rather bounces to
some entry point on the open Outlook screen. I am able to send and receive
email successfully. All other data is present, except calendar entries.
