Ali AGP won't let me boot

I upgraded an old but stable and useful win98 se machine
running on a Gigabyte GA5AX motherboard to Win2k. This
board has an Alladin chipset, Ali 1541/1533 n. and s.
bridges.

What happens is sometimes it boots and works ok for some
time, but then mouse gets jerky and eventually stops and
system is locked up. It might or might not come back. I
usually get tired of it and reboot, but if it had just
locked up, it usually gets stuck on the part just before
it turns the keyboard lites off. The second, small blue
timer bar, not the big black and white one at the bottom,
stops. I know it always stops at the ali AGP system file.
Sometimes it just slows down, usually it gets stuck right
there. I have the latest drivers and BIOS installd.

Anyone else had problems with Ali chipsets, or GA5AX
motherboards and Win2k?

This is typical for the exotic and hard-to-trace problems
you get when you upgrade from a Win9x OS to Win2000.
The upgrade involves lots of compromises, and some of
them can be detrimental to your machine. Do a clean
installation of Win2000!
