is it possible to set up a spread sheet and then have an
alert based on one column/cell to alert me? ex: I put in
a date and when that date comes the computer notifys me
that it is about to expire?

Yes it is quite possible do create something like this - Do you want the warning to come up when you first open the workbook? or at some other time? and what kind of warning do you want?

You could use Conditional Formatting from the Format menu to
display the cell is a different color if a certain condition is
met.
