Hi..
My performance so far,, I have now got the computer to recognise that there
is a hard drive on the POST screen. I have tried booting from floppy and
cdrom, After the POST screen it comes up with the next screen loading
pmi/dmi data and then it gets to the point "remove disks or media and press
any button to restart" ..so I do and it just goes to the next line saying
the same thing and on and on so i have to turn it off manually...
I cant get to the A prompt which is where i want to be but it wont let me
get there.. The floppy drive does work and the green LED lights up and then
goes off (as far as i am aware that is what is suppose to happen) ..so where
do I go from here???

TIA

it sounds as though you have the cable on correctly (lite going on then off) try clearing the cmos..(short the jumper) or check your
boot order again, make sure that you have it set correctly. Also, if this is a case where the floppy sits behind a bezel in front
and you actually push a button on the case to release the disk, make sure that the button isn't getting in the way of proper
functions. Your floppy disk/drive may be shot....try a different bootable floppy

Ok. I think the "remove disks or media and press any button to
restart" says that the computer either has not found any bootdevice
with media in it ahead of your unbootable hd, or that it doesn't
recognize that media as _bootable_ !

Now why is that?
In the case of the CD and install cd, check that the CDROM is first in
your bootorder. (BIOS)
In the case of the floppy it seems your floppy isn't bootable?! or
your floppydrive doesn't work...

First thing would be to check up on your bootorder, I think.
My plan A would be to put the CDROM first in the bootorder (Really,
just put it _FIRST_ and don't try anything clever) and try to boot on
the install CD again.
(Assuming your mobo lets you boot on CD at all, and assuming that it
offers you connection alternative to good ol' EIDE, you shouldn't use
the alternative. Use classic EIDE. I also assume you've configured
master/slave jumpers on hd and cd correctly? Does it recognize that
you have a cd connected?.)

Plan B would be to put floppydrive first in the bootorder and/or try a
different bootfloppy.

I don't want to get ahead of things, but you sort of basicly built
this thing? on an old mobo, didn't you? Otherwise you'd changed one
item at a time and we'd know if something didn't work, or wasn't
connected right.

Plan C would be to continue to try to get the floppy to work. If A and
B fails, concentrate first on finding out what's wrong with the
floppy.

Good luck for now.

did an install ever just die prior to this? like it wrote somethnig to the boot sector of the hard drive...

"remove disks or media and press any button to restart" .

This is the exact wordage? its not what you normally see when the HD is not formatted or there is a non- system floppy in the drive
etc...

Thanks ancra and JAD...

I changed all the settings again to boot from cdrom and it started to
install winxp (from the cd).. I had to reformat as it was in fat32,,,it got
to installing windows and then came up with "can not continue with this
installation blah blah... something about an IO problem.. This doesnt
really bother me as I wanted Doze 98SE anyway..I took out the cd changed the
settings back to A,C,SCSI...and it won't boot from the floppy drive...I have
downloaded a boot disk from ..bootdisk.com...so i know there isn't anything
wrong with the disk...I think it has got to be the floppy drive. I will get
a new one and let ya know...

Thanks for everything everyone.
