Why Ajax instead of E4X? Why not both?

Netscape came out with Javascript.
Microsoft countered by coming out with their Jscript.
Netscape submitted Javascript to ECMA Intl. for standardization.
No one bothered with Jscript so Microsoft also submitted it to ECMA.

AJAX encompases what E4X does but AJAX does more. E4X is a simple extension
to ECMAscript (aka Javascript or Jscript).

So, to rephrase: Why a six-pack instead of 2 cans?

E4x is fairly new spec. Whereas AJAX is a new name coined leveraging the
technologies widely available within the well established browsers.
