Page 18 of the manual says that to hear sound on the AIW 9600, you must
attach the output cable to the line in port on the sound card.

I don't have any sound, but I've got a motherboard with built in sound.
Does that mean I need to purchase a separate sound card so that I can attach
this cable?

No, one of your motherboards ports will be Mic/Line In, simply loop it
to that.

You'll have to specify which MB if you want more specifics.

Will this provide good sound or is it preferable to purchase an additional
sound card. The whole reason I bought this was to convert my family vhs
tapes to cd

It all depends on what motherboard, and what onboard sound chipset it
uses, I would get a SB Live 5.1 if its AC97, if its AD1985, leave it,
its just as good (for a single chip solution vs dedicated card)

| The motherboard is an Intel Boad D865Perl (
| http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/rl/rl_available.htm ) with build in
| audio, lan and firewire.
|
|
Integrated 6-channel ADI 1985 with SoundMAX* 4 XL and AudioESP*(analog,
coaxial digital and optical digital output)

dang, the AD1985 is more than good enough, remember that VHS is an
analog format, and your basically getting the audio quality you would
with tapes -> cd.

No point in getting a 24bit audigy or anything, if VHS is your primary
source for video.
