AIW 128 PRO TV tuner problem

Folks - I have the above, with MMC 7.7, and can't get the tuner working.
There's no way to get the tuner to scan - the autoscan button just returns
immediately. Used to work fine, and I've tried a reinstall, and going back
to MMC7.1 and all stops in between. There's plenty of UHF signal, and the
composite input works fine. Has a chip died? Is this a software problem?
Anyone got suggestions?

skip the auto and enter channel manually.
